Automobile Black Boxes to Become Standardized in October
Beginning in October of this year, event data recorders, or “black boxes” as they are more popularly known, will become standard across all automobiles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the decision partially in the wake of the Toyota unintended acceleration fiasco in which actually reading data provided by the automaker’s specific black box proved to be difficult. Although the boxes and the data they record will soon be standard, it’s important to note that they are not yet mandatory.
