Efficacy of New South Wales Safety Cameras Examined

Safety cameras at intersections in New South Wales, Australia, seem to have both a positive and a negative impact on road safety. In some areas, such as Wollongong, accident rates have risen.  Some believe the cameras may contribute to driver panic and create situations in which a car accident is more likely to happen. In many other locations, however, it has been noted that speeding decreased, as did the money spent on cleaning up car accident sites. Tests are currently being conducted in negatively impacted areas to determine whether or not the cameras are as effective as officials hoped they would be.
