Hurricane Sandy Delays Drug Approval Decisions
Hurricane Sandy has had a heretofore unseen impact on the Food and Drug Administration’s ability to approve drugs. The FDA and other government agencies were forced to close their doors as the storm battered the East Coast, which means those drugs and medical devices that were awaiting approval decisions by the end of October were not able to see their deadlines met. Thus, a slight delay was announced for decisions on drugs awaiting approval. The user free program puts benchmarks for approval in place that the FDA must adhere to. The FDA believes that decisions on these drugs would not be delayed more than a couple days.
