New Jersey Uses Strict Penalties, Education to Combat Texting

Two Central Jersey counties, Middlesex and Hunterdon, have decided to take a rather more friendly course in handling distracted drivers caught texting. Rather than making citizens pay a fine of $100, they have created online driver’s education videos geared toward reeducating drivers about the dangers of texting behind the wheel. New Jersey currently has some of the toughest distracted driver laws and is exploring new legislature that would create a progressively increasing penalty for repeat offenders. In both cases New Jersey plans to lead other states by their example.
