Sharrow Safety in Edmonton Called Into Question
The safety of sharrows is being called into question. A sharrow is basically a lane of traffic that can be shared by both bicycles and vehicles, and it’s signified by roadside directives and painted arrows and bike outlines found on the pavement. They have been installed throughout Edmonton, but the University of British Columbia was recently able to deduce through research that it cannot yet be demonstrated that sharrows promote safety. In fact, confusion could make the road less safe, whereas fully separated lanes have been shown to improve bike safety.
