Wheelchair Defect Leads Coach to Recall 1,627 Phoenix Buses

Another vehicle has had to be recalled because one of its components poses a defect that compromises consumer safety.

The Coach and Equipment Manufacturing Corporation is recalling their Phoenix transit buses of the model years between 2006 and 2010.  The recall concerns the Braun Century-2 and the Vista-2 Wheelchair Lifts that were installed onto each of the vehicles in question.  A total of 1,627 buses are equipped with the lifts that pose the threat to safety.

The recall was necessitated due to a malfunction with the roll stop latches on the outer barrier of the wheelchair lifts.  These latches can bend or otherwise misalign.  The defect presents itself after the buses have been out in the field for a long time and the lift gets used again and again.  If the misalignment happens, the roll stop is not latched as it should be.  Thus, a wheelchair occupant may roll over this critical component, and the failure of the roll stop to impede the individual’s progress could result in injury to the wheelchair occupant if they fall from the elevated lift.

Coach and Equipment is contacting owners, although there’s no word at the moment on when such contact will be made.  Repairs will be conducted by authorized dealers at no cost to the owners of the buses.
